The National Women’s History Project (NWHP) has declared the 2010 Women’s History Month theme is “Writing Women Back into History.” “It often seems that the history of women is written in invisible ink,” says the NWHP, “Even when recognized in their own times, women are frequently left out of the history books.” In keeping with the theme, the NWHP is highlighting past themes that had great impact on American life. Each of these themes recognizes a different aspect of women’s achievements, from ecology to art, and from sports to politics.
One of the goals of the Avoice Virtual Library is to capture the legacy of African Americans in Congress to insure that the legislative achievements of African American women and men are recognized and remembered. Since 1968 when Representative Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman to serve in U.S. Congress, the women of the CBC have played a major role on a broad range of domestic and international issues including Civil Rights, Voting Rights, Education, Healthcare, Homeland Security and the current engagements in Iraq and Afghanistan.
